Getting Started with M-PESA

Registration Requirements

To use M-PESA, you must first register for the service. The registration process requires:

  • Valid identification: National ID, Passport, Alien ID, or Military ID
  • Safaricom SIM card: Must be active and registered in your name
  • Visit an authorized agent: Registration can be done at Safaricom shops, retail outlets, or M-PESA agents
  • Age requirement: Must be at least 18 years old

Account Limits

Current M-PESA transaction limits include:

  • Maximum single transaction: KES 250,000
  • Maximum daily transactions: KES 500,000
  • Maximum account balance: KES 500,000

Sending Money through M-PESA

Step-by-Step Process

Method 1: Using USSD Code (*334#)

  1. Dial *334# on your Safaricom line
  2. Select "Send Money" from the menu
  3. Enter recipient's phone number (must include country code for international transfers)
  4. Enter the amount you wish to send
  5. Confirm recipient details displayed on screen
  6. Enter your M-PESA PIN to authorize the transaction
  7. Receive confirmation SMS with transaction details

Method 2: Using M-PESA App

  1. Open the M-PESA App and log in
  2. Select "Send Money" from the home screen
  3. Choose recipient from contacts or enter phone number
  4. Enter amount and add optional message
  5. Review transaction details and confirm
  6. Enter your PIN to complete the transaction

Practical Example: Sending KES 5,000

Scenario: John wants to send KES 5,000 to his friend Mary using her phone number 0722123456.

Steps:

  1. John dials *334#
  2. Selects "Send Money"
  3. Enters 0722123456
  4. Enters amount: 5000
  5. Confirms: "Send KES 5,000 to Mary Njeri 0722123456"
  6. Enters his M-PESA PIN
  7. Receives confirmation: "Transaction successful. KES 5,000 sent to Mary Njeri"

Transaction fee: KES 78 (for amounts KES 5,001 - KES 7,500)

Receiving Money through M-PESA

How Money Reception Works

When someone sends you money through M-PESA, the process is automatic and requires no action from you as the recipient. Here's what happens:

  1. Sender initiates transaction using your phone number
  2. You receive SMS notification instantly
  3. Money is credited to your M-PESA account immediately
  4. Your account balance is updated and displayed in the SMS

Receiving Money from Abroad

M-PESA partners with international money transfer services to enable you to receive funds from overseas. Popular services include:

  • Western Union: Direct transfers to your M-PESA account
  • WorldRemit: Instant transfers with competitive rates
  • Remitly: Zero transfer fees with debit card payments

Requirements for international transfers:

  • Must be registered M-PESA user
  • Sender needs your phone number (with country code +254)
  • No charges for receiving money

Withdrawing Money from M-PESA

Method 1: Agent Withdrawal

Step-by-Step Process:

  1. Locate an M-PESA agent (look for M-PESA signs at shops)
  2. Dial *334# on your phone
  3. Select "Withdraw Cash"
  4. Choose "From Agent"
  5. Enter the agent number (displayed at the outlet)
  6. Enter the store number (additional security feature)
  7. Enter withdrawal amount
  8. Confirm agent details and transaction fee
  9. Enter your M-PESA PIN
  10. Give your phone to the agent to complete the transaction
  11. Receive cash and confirmation SMS

Practical Example: Withdrawing KES 3,000

Scenario: Sarah needs to withdraw KES 3,000 cash from her M-PESA account.

Steps:

  1. Sarah visits nearby M-PESA agent shop
  2. Dials *334# and selects "Withdraw Cash"
  3. Selects "From Agent"
  4. Enters agent number: 123456
  5. Enters store number: 789
  6. Enters amount: 3000
  7. Confirms: "Withdraw KES 3,000 from John's Shop, fee KES 52"
  8. Enters M-PESA PIN
  9. Hands phone to agent who completes transaction

Method 2: ATM Withdrawal

Step-by-Step Process:

  1. Visit partner bank ATM (KCB, Equity, or Co-op Bank)
  2. Dial *334# on your phone
  3. Select "Withdraw Cash"
  4. Choose "From ATM"
  5. Enter withdrawal amount
  6. Enter your M-PESA PIN
  7. Receive voucher code via SMS (valid for 10 minutes)
  8. At ATM: Select "Withdraw from M-PESA"
  9. Enter your phone number
  10. Enter the voucher code
  11. Select amount and collect cash
